Remember the classic late 90’s film ‘Soul Food‘ and its EPIC soundtrack? both which were so successful its spawned its own showtime series that ran for several seasons?

Well now according to reports there is a sequel in the works that will center around the new generation of the Joseph family and Fox 2000 is anchoring the project.

Via The Hollywood Reporter:

The studio is planning a sequel called More Soul Food, based on the 1997 ensemble film.

George Tillman Jr., who wrote and directed the original, is writing the new script with Nathan Skulnik. Tillman’s State Street Pictures will produce along with Tracey and Babyface Edmonds.

The original film, starring an ensemble cast that included Vanessa Williams, Vivica A. Fox, Nia Long, Michael Beach and Mekhi Phifer, followed a close-knit African American family who had a tradition of eating a big dinner together every Sunday. But their bond begins to fall apart after the death of their matriarch.

The film, which earned $43.7 million, also spawned a Showtime TV series, Soul Food: The Series, which aired from 2000 through 2004.

The sequel will chronicle the new, millennial generation of the Joseph family. In the age of cell phones and social media, the once-close clan finds themselves disconnected and, without the guidance of the elders who have always held things together, they struggle to rediscover the importance of tradition and family.

As a big fan of the Soul Food franchise I am so here for this! I’ve been wanting a reboot of the series for years but will gladly take the film. Hopefully the original cast will be incorporated into the sequel and hopefully we get a great soundtrack to go along with it like the original.
