With season 3 of her hit WeTV reality show ‘Mary Mary’ just weeks away Erica Campbell who is now pursuing her solo music career as documented on the show with her sister, recently came under fire for a promo shot she unveiled.
The snap above was released on her Instagram page in support of her new album ‘Help‘ which is due March 25, 2014, and although seemingly innocent, it came under major scrutiny from the Christian community and some of her supporters.
Apostle Stacey Woods of Impact Outreach Ministries, Inc. lashed out at the 41-year-old on Facebook for her form fitting white attire:
“THIS IS NOT OKAY. Yes, you are a beautiful, curvy woman…but NO MA’AM YOU ARE SINGING THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST. Saints…smh COME ON.”
This week Erica responded to the criticism during an exclusive interview with Essence magazine:
“I’m taking it in stride and I’m keeping it moving,” “When we took the picture I felt beautiful, I felt confident, I felt sexy and I felt strong.”
“I thought I looked cute,” she says jokingly, “but it obviously offended some people, which was never my intention.”
“This is about confidence and realizing that God made you and that you are beautiful just the way you are,” she said. “I think that young girls shouldn’t only get sexy images from people who are not proclaiming Jesus. But I am. And I’m cute too.”
The recently Grammy nominated mother went on to express that she shared the photos with her husband and family as soon as she saw them and they were fully supportive.
Do you think the gospel/Christian community is too critical? or are they right?
