As the masses continue debating over Beyonce and her VMA performance this past Sunday, we were inspired to go back and revisit some past performances from the show that had the world talking as well. We didn’t need to search far, as when we think of epic, showstopping and entertaining, we instantly think none other than Janet Jackson.

Today’s Throwback Thursday, comes from the Queen of Pop’s 2009 VMA performance which served as a tribute to her late brother Michael Jackson who had just passed that June. Her performance of their smash hit ‘Scream’ marked the first time Jan had performed the song and executed the choreography since it was first recorded with her brother in 1995.

Jan took to the stage alongside Laurie Ann Gibson and her troop of dancers as they dazzled to the packed house which included Beyonce herself, Jennifer Lopez, Kanye West, Pink and many more on their feet.

Speaking on revisiting their classic song, Janet revealed: “I played the role that I’ve always played in his life, his little sister that was there by his side, that had his back no matter what,” she said. “That’s what ‘Scream’ was for me.”

Check out the epic and timeless moment below!

As a bonus we thought it only fitting to add Janet’s other major performance that year, as she opened up the 2009 American Music Awards with a first time ever almost 10 minute medley. Check that out!
