This iconic moment was spearheaded from several conversations by former model and activist, Bethann Hardison regarding the lack of black models on the runways. In fact, there were more models of color working in the 70’s and 80’s. Hardison made it her mission to call out designers and publications for unfairly representing the global market. In 2008, Franca Sozzani, Editor of Vogue Italia, and legendary photographer, Steven Meisel collaborated on what was to become the fastest selling issue of all time. The original issued in the U.S. and U.K. sold out in 72 hours. Practically every black model from Iman, Pat Cleveland to Jourdan Dunn, a newbie at the time, took part in this landmark issue.
