After a limited run in theaters earlier this year, ‘Luther: Never Too Much‘ the highly-anticipated documentary on the legendary Luther Vandross, premiered on CNN on New Year’s Day.
The Dawn Porter-directed docu-film details the seismic story of the iconic singer through the voice of Luther himself as he tells his story via rare archival footage and audio.
The film also features exclusive interviews with friends, family, and collaborators such as Jamie Foxx, Mariah Carey, Dionne Warwick, Valerie Simpson, Roberta Flack, and more.
The documentary covered his formative years in Harlem, appearing in the Apollo Theater house band and the first episodes of Sesame Street, through his ascendance to become the indisputable master of the love song.
The film unpacks the nuances and ironies of Vandross’ storied career, exploring his personal life, health and weight struggles, and much more!
The project was a collaboration with Raindog Films and Jamie Foxx’s Foxxhole Productions for Sony Music Entertainment and Sony Music Publishing, in association with Trilogy Film.
Get into some of the reactions below following last night’s premiere.
Richard Marx wasn’t wrong to be pissed. I’m glad he spoke and fired that shot. If Luther didn’t comment on his sexuality his “friends” shouldn’t @CNN #nevertoomuch #LutherVandross #CNN #RichardMarx #Luthernevertoomuch pic.twitter.com/XXDl2z3Kqu

Luther’s musicianship was out of this world. He obviously had an incredible voice, but the producer, writer and ARRANGER that that man was?
My God, what an ear! #LutherNeverTooMuch pic.twitter.com/BSnBallWhT

Watching this CNN documentary on Luther Vandross lowkey brought me to tears. This man was so damn talented how he perfected his craft & endured so many challenges to be the star that he was. They don’t make talent like this anymore. #LutherNeverTooMuch pic.twitter.com/7MDIZCvR5e

Awesome documentary. Not sure why it took 19 years.
Sad to see Luther’s struggles with body dysmorphia & depression he had as a clear result of his sexuality…Never mind him having an incomparable voice and talent…that loneliness got the best of him. 💔#LutherNeverTooMuch pic.twitter.com/YZAjEYXqnG
