Fresh off his history-making Grammy sweep, where he took home five awards last Sunday night, Kendrick Lamar is just days away from his highly anticipated Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show this Sunday.
The ‘Not Like Us’ hitmaker sat down for a rare interview during the Apple Music Super Bowl press conference on Thursday, where he reacted to becoming the first-ever solo Hip-Hop artist to headline the big show. He also discussed his new album, upcoming tour, and more.
Kendrick opened up about his success leading up to this moment and teased what viewers can expect from his upcoming performance, which he says will focus on “storytelling.”
“I’ve always been very open about storytelling throughout my entire catalogue and my musical history. I have a passion for bringing that to whatever stage I’m on,” he explained.
He also spoke about his identity, stating, “The culture of being Black is something I can’t help. It’s not something I think about; I’m Black, and that’s going to come out every time. I can’t sugarcoat it or downplay it. I’m at a point in my life where I can’t fake the funk for anything.”
Kendrick concluded, “I have to be who I am authentically, and if the world can’t accept that, then so be it. But for those who are rocking with it, I’m going to put it all out there, whether it’s in private or on the main stage.”
