The 2023 MTV Video Music Awards aired on Tuesday night (Sept. 12) live from the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ and we’ve already given you a recap of all the speeches, performances, and highlights of the night.
One of the most talked about moments of the night occurred not on stage, but backstage between Megan Thee Stallion and Justin Timberlake.
As fans know, Justin reunited with his group N’Sync on stage to present Taylor Swift with the ‘Best Pop’ award and then ran into Megan backstage.
Backstage cameras captured what appeared to be a verbal altercation between the two based on initial speculation.

Social media ran rampant with speculation about what happened during the interaction with many assuming that Justin said something out of line that set Megan off. However, sources who were backstage have come forward to clear the air and revealed it was all love between the two superstars.
A source close to the situation who witnessed the old school-new school superstar summit tells Billboard that Megan was actually so excited to meet JT and company that she was actually asking for a proper introduction and re-do in a less chaotic situation. “Meg loves Justin. She was saying, ‘No, no, no, we’ve never met before. It was their first time meeting, and she was excited,” the source says.
ET reported that a source said Timberlake told the “Sweetest Pie” rapper, “‘It’s so nice to meet you,’” with Megan replying, “No, no, this don’t count, this don’t count, we gotta meet proper.’”
At press time spokespeople for Megan and Timberlake could not be reached for comment on the incident, but Meg put the rumors to rest later in the night when she posted a video on her TikTok of the pair getting cozy at an afterparty at Tao Downtown in a private sky box. In a clip cued to Rukai Mori’s “Do As Infinity,” the new friends smile and laugh at the camera while goofing around in a clip the rapper captioned, “I just talk with my hands. lol. See ya next time @Justin Timberlake.”
