Drake and Kanye West have been battling it over wax with their recent records, and on the charts with their new albums over the past two weeks–but now they might be battling it out on the Verzuz stage if Kanye has it his way.
In a recent interview with his Verzuz co-founder Timbaland, Swizz Beatz revealed that Yeezy recently expressed interest in doing a Verzuz battle with Drake, although he’s not clear where the talks of it stand.
“Kanye was willing to do the Verzuz … He wanted to battle Drake…I left that up to them, and that’s what I told to Timb, as well. I was like, ‘Yo, they have to bring that to the table.’ They would have to agree to do that. Kanye was ready, but I don’t know where that’s at now. I’m still leaving it on them.”
Get into it below.
As far as the charts go, Drake recently earned the biggest week for any album in over a year as ‘Certified Lover Boy’ debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 as of last week.
The long-awaited project, which was released on Sept. 3, opened with 613,000 equivalent album units, the biggest week for an album since Taylor Swift’s Folklore launched at No. 1 with 846,000 units in August 2020. Additionally, CLB is Drake’s 10th No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and marks the largest week for a rap album or album by a male artist since his own ‘Scorpion’ in July 2018.
Drake dethroned Kanye’s latest project ‘DONDA,’ which initially had 2021’s biggest week when it opened at No. 1 with 309,000 units just the week prior to CLB. ‘DONDA’ dropped to the No. 2 spot in its second week with 141,000 equivalent album units.
