‘The Color Purple’ has everyone talking, and after months of anticipation and weeks of promotion from the cast, the film has dominated the box office for its debut weekend.
Following initial estimates for its Christmas day opening, the film added $7.1 million to its total on Tuesday (December 26), bringing its domestic box office tally to a whopping $25 million after only two days of release.
The Warner Bros. film, an adaptation of the book-turned-beloved-movie-turned-hit-Broadway-musical, opened in theaters on Monday. It nearly set a holiday record with $18 million, marking the largest Christmas Day opening for a movie since 2009 and the second-biggest Christmas Day opening of all time.
The film outpaced 2012′s “Les Misérables,” which snagged $18.1 million on its Christmas debut, and fell just short of the 2009 holiday opening of “Sherlock Holmes” at $24.6 million, according to data from Comscore.
