Trevor Noah Makes History As The First Black Man To Win EMMY For Outstanding Talk Series EVER [Video]

Posted January 16, 2024

The 2024 (75th Annual) EMMYs on Monday night was one for the books, with several history-making wins all from people of color.

Following major wins from Niecy Nash-Betts, Quinta Brunson, the ‘Martin’ cast reunion, and more, Trevor Noah secured a major spot in history books.

‘The Daily Show with Trevor Noah’ won a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Talk Series beating out ‘The Problem with Jon Stewart,’ ‘Late Night with Seth Meyers,’ ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!,’ and ‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.’

This was ‘The Daily Show with Trevor Noah’s first win in that category after following Jon Stewart (whose The Daily Show won 11 times in this category) as host of the Comedy Central franchise.

Noah’s win makes him the first-ever person of color to win in this category in the 75-year history of the show.

‘The Daily Show’ is only the second show to win in this category (or predecessor categories) with two different hosts. The first was ‘The Tonight Show,’ which won both under Johnny Carson (in 1977 and 1992) and Jay Leno (in 1995) according to Billboard.

It is worth noting that, the category of Outstanding Talk Series, was previously combined with the category of Outstanding Variety Sketch Series and known as Outstanding Variety Series. Flip Wilson and Keenen Ivory Wayans were the only two Black men to secure the awards in that category between 1971 and the category being retired in 2015.
