History was made this Sunday during the N.F.L. Draft, three days after it had begun, as it neared the end of the seventh and final round. It was at that point, with the two hundred and forty-ninth pick, that the St. Louis Rams selected Michael Sam, from the University of Missouri. Back in February, Micheal made headlines for coming out to the world and at the time could potentially become the first openly gay player in the NFL if he were to be drafted. Now that possibility is a reality.
To make the historic moment all the more real, ESPN was live with Michael, his boyfriend Vito Cammisano and close friends as he received the call from the Rams head coach, Jeff Fisher notifying him. Overcome with emotion, Michael broke down in tears as he talked to his new coach, all before laying a kiss on his partner. Check out the emotional celebratory moment below.
