Michael Sam, an All-American defensive lineman from the University of Missouri, revealed on Sunday that he’s gay in an interview with ESPN. As crazy as it sounds in 2o14, if Michael is drafted by the National Football League he will officially become the first ever openly gay NFL player.
He said he told his Missouri teammates in August and received nothing but support from his team and coach.
“I understand how big this is, It’s a big deal. No one has done this before. And it’s kind of a nervous process, but I know what I want to be … I want to be a football player in the NFL.”
Michael’s agent Joe Barkett revealed to CNN his optimism of the possibility of him being picked up by a team and being accepted in the NFL as a gay player:
“I think, if anything, teams will look at it and see a guy who was honest and upfront instead of waiting until after the draft to potentially make his announcement,””Mike was forward, and he wants the team who drafts him to accept him for who he is.”
Following his announcement and interview the NFL issued a statement via Twitter commending Michael’s decision and further cementing the potential for him to be drafted and make history:
“We admire Michael Sam’s honesty and courage. Michael is a football player. Any player with ability and determination can succeed in the NFL. We look forward to welcoming and supporting Michael Sam in 2014.”
