HBO To Launch New Show ‘Bros’ Focusing On Black Gay Man & His Brothers

Bros

Following the premiere of the online webseries Triangle just last week, it looks like HBO is taking a stab at tackling content themed around homosexuality in the African American community with their new tentative series ‘Bros’.

To be clear, the show is not solely a “gay themed” show but revolves around three brothers, one who is gay and how the three of them navigate their lives, relationships and love in the crazy city of LA. According to FrontiersLA.com:

Bros started life as a pilot titled Bros Before Hos, and is written by Ben Cory Jones (Hand of God) based loosely on his own life as a black gay man with straight brothers. Anthony Hemingway (Red Tails) is attached to direct. The show centres on Kendall, having recently come out as gay, as he and his brothers try to navigate their love lives together in L.A.

Speaking to Indiewire while filming the pilot, Jones was keen to emphasise that the focus was on the characters, not on their race or sexuality:

“Bros Before Hos isn’t a black story or a gay story – it’s a family story about three brothers, who happen to be black, and one who happens to be gay. I do have a particular interest in stories about the black male experience because I want to tell stories that reflect how I walk through the world. There seem to be more stories that deal with the interior lives of black women, but it’s hard to find stories that deal with the interior lives of black men. We’re either thugs or athletes, but there’s so much more to who we are that falls in between that spectrum. It’s ironic that in 2014, and even with a black president, one of the hardest things to be in this country right now is a young black man.”

No word on when ‘Bros’ is set to debut on HBO but based on the trailer which dropped back in June and HBO’s history of producing award winning series such as ‘Oz’, ‘True Blood’, ‘Boardwalk Empire’ and others, we are sure this one will be a success. Check out the trailer and pilot episode below.
