Kim Burrell Officially Disinvited From BMI Trailblazer Awards, Will No Longer Be Honored As Planned [Official Statement]

Posted January 6, 2017

Remember earlier this week when I told you that Kim Burrell was set to make her first public appearance since the whole anti-gay sermon, at the upcoming BMI Trailblazers of Gospel Awards on Jan. 14. Burrell was set to be honored alongside Marvin Sapp in front of her peers for her many years and contributions to gospel music.

The event and her honoring had been secured since November, long before the sermon, but now that is officially off the table. Following being cut from her “Ellen” appearance, losing her radio show, and officially deleting her Facebook page last night, now Kim has lost yet another major gig.

According to Page Six:

Gospel singer Kim Burrell continues to face backlash after a video of her delivering a homophobic sermon went viral last week. BMI has uninvited Burrell from attending its Trailblazers of Gospel Music Awards ceremony on Jan. 14.

“Given the controversy surrounding this year’s co-honoree Kim Burrell, we have asked her to not take part in the ceremony in order to allow the focus to remain on the songwriters and their music,” a rep for the performing rights organization said in an exclusive statement to Page Six.

Burrell was supposed to be honored at the ceremony along with gospel singer Marvin Sapp. “BMI was founded over 76 years ago with an open door policy to welcome songwriters across all genres, and that same spirit of tolerance, diversity and inclusiveness continues today,” the statement read.

I can’t say I am surprised. Do you think at this point, Kim should perhaps come out of hiding, and speak on the matter?
