ESSENCE Festival of Culture is preparing to honor one of R&B’s most beloved and influential icons, Aaliyah, with a special tribute curated by none other than Missy Elliott.
The tribute will take place during ESSENCE Fest’s Sunday night celebration in New Orleans and will honor the life, music, style, and cultural impact of the late “Princess of R&B.” The moment is especially fitting as 2026 marks 30 years since the release of Aaliyah’s groundbreaking sophomore album, One in a Million. It also marks the 25th anniversary of her final album, 2001’s Aaliyah.
Missy Elliott’s involvement makes the tribute even more meaningful. Missy was not only Aaliyah’s friend, but also one of her key creative collaborators alongside Timbaland. Together, they helped craft some of Aaliyah’s most timeless records, including “One in a Million” and “If Your Girl Only Knew,” both of which helped shape the sound of 90s R&B and influence generations of artists who followed.
Aaliyah’s connection to ESSENCE Festival also runs deep. She performed at the very first ESSENCE Festival in 1995 as a teenager, sharing the stage during a historic lineup that included legends such as Luther Vandross and Aretha Franklin. Now, decades later, ESSENCE is bringing her legacy back to that same cultural stage in a major way.
While full details on the tribute performers have not yet been revealed, ESSENCE teased that special guests will be involved, with Missy leading the creative direction. Given Aaliyah’s lasting influence across music, fashion, dance, and pop culture, the tribute is expected to be one of the most emotional and talked-about moments of the weekend.
Aaliyah passed away in 2001 at just 22 years old, but her impact remains undeniable. Her smooth vocals, effortless cool, futuristic sound, and trendsetting style continue to inspire new generations of fans and artists alike.
With Missy Elliott at the helm, ESSENCE Fest’s Aaliyah tribute is sure to be done with love, intention, and the respect “Baby Girl” deserves.
ESSENCE Festival of Culture returns to New Orleans July 3-5, 2026.
