For seniors of Prince George’s County, MD who were bummed at the thought of not having an official in-person graduation ceremony for 2020 due to the global health crisis (COVID-19), they were just gifted a great surprise.

According to PGCPS, the county will now hold an all-star eGraduation Celebration featuring the DMV’s own Taraji P. Henson. The news came via an official email from PG County Public School’s Chief Executive Officer on Friday (May 8):

Dear Prince George’s County Public Schools Community,

I receive emails daily about ways to provide our high school seniors with a celebration worthy of their accomplishments during these unprecedented times. Today, I am excited to announce a system-wide virtual graduation celebration in their honor, featuring Academy Award-nominated actress Taraji P. Henson as the commencement speaker!

The eGraduation Celebration will pay tribute to our estimated 8,000 seniors at 31 traditional, public charter and alternative high schools. Ms. Henson is a 1988 Oxon Hill High School graduate. Other prominent alums are on board for the celebration including R&B singer Kenny Lattimore, a PGCPS Alumni Hall of Fame inductee; radio host/comedian Joe Clair; NFL cornerback Joe Haden and local news anchor Taylor Thomas. More surprises are in store when it airs Saturday, May 30 on WJLA 24/7 News (Comcast 808, FiOS 508, DirecTV/Dish 8) and Sunday, May 31 on ABC7.

I know this is not the same as walking across the stage on graduation day. I am working with the Board of Education to give our students that moment once these restrictions are lifted. Until then, I want them to feel our PGCPS pride in their accomplishments, the unstoppable Class of 2020.

Sincerely,

Monica Goldson, Ed.D.
Chief Executive Officer

On Saturday, May 30 and Sunday, May 31 we will host a virtual graduation celebration in honor of the Class of 2020 with a commencement address by Oxon Hill High School alum Taraji P. Henson @TheRealTaraji! ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣The celebration will air on @abc7dc .⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣We realize this cannot replace the experience of walking across the stage with friends and celebrating with family — and we will do everything in our power to give our seniors that moment once restrictions are lifted. ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣Additional details on the celebration are forthcoming.

Taraji recently shared a throwback from the 90’s living in the DMV.

#TBT circa 1990. This guys is one of my famous wet sets done by me 😩😂😂😂🤷🏾‍♀️ WHO REMEMBERS #lottabodysettinglotion 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾 That was HAIR CRACK in DC in the 90’s baaaabyyyy.I used to charge $20 for wet sets 😩 that was my lil side hustle. Oh I also did acrylics (that is another story😩) God saved me because when I didn’t get accepted into #dukeellingtonschoolofthearts I thought that meant I wasn’t cut out for acting so I wanted to enroll in cosmetology school but missed it by one year. Went to North Carolina A&T for engineering FAILED PRE-Calc with a BIG FAT F (with 2 tutors 😩) CLEAR SIGN FROM GOD!!!! That is when my daddy (may he rest in HEAVAN) told me to get my ass back home to DC and enroll in Howard for acting because he knew that was my calling!!! Funny thing is I always kept my passion for hair even when I was acting. Look at GOD!!! I now have my own hair care line @tphbytaraji (and we are just getting started) sold in @target stores EVERYWHERE!!!MORAL OF THE STORY TRUST GOD. ALL DOORS THAT CLOSE ARE NOT DEAD ENDS!!!! I love you guys. I pray this motivates someone today!!! YOU CAN DO IT ALL!!! #GODIS #PeriodTpooh 💅🏾🙏🏾💋💋💋
