Netflix is officially taking us back to Hillman College!
The streamer dropped the full official trailer for its highly anticipated A Different World sequel series on Monday, giving fans their best look yet at the new generation of students — while bringing plenty of familiar faces along for the ride. The series premieres September 24, exactly 39 years after the original A Different World debuted in 1987.
At the center of the new series is Deborah Wayne, played by Tony Award winner Maleah Joi Moon, the daughter of original fan favorites Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert, played once again by Kadeem Hardison and Jasmine Guy.
The trailer finds Deborah beginning her freshman year at Hillman while trying to establish an identity outside of her famous parents’ legacy. Dwayne and Whitley are clearly still very involved in their daughter’s life, as Deborah admits that they’ve been pushing Hillman on her for years and she feels pressure to prove she can succeed there.
Along the way, Deborah forms her own Hillman crew, including roommate Rashida (Alijah Kai), Hazel (Kennedi Reece), Amir (Jordan Aaron Hall), Kojo (Chibuikem Uche) and football standout Shaquille (Cornell Young IV). There’s already history between Deborah and Shaquille — and in another direct connection to the original series, he’s the son of Dwayne and Whitley’s longtime friend Ron Johnson, with Darryl M. Bell returning in the role.
The new trailer also makes it clear that Netflix isn’t leaving the OG Hillman family behind.
In addition to Guy, Hardison and Bell, fans get glimpses of returning favorites Debbie Allen, Cree Summer, Jenifer Lewis and Jada Pinkett Smith, reprising their respective roles from the original series. The trailer even teases appearances from Method Man and Summer Walker.
Behind the scenes, the continuation also has some important ties to the original. Debbie Allen, who played a major role in shaping the classic series as a producer and director, returns as an executive producer and directs the new series premiere. Felicia Pride serves as showrunner and executive producer.
And of course, the nostalgia doesn’t stop with the cast. As previously announced, Brandy has recorded a new rendition of the beloved A Different World theme song for the series.
The 10-episode first season looks to blend the friendship, romance, humor and HBCU culture that made the original so beloved with the experiences facing a new generation of Black college students.
