Gladys Knight is stepping back from her busy touring schedule after more than seven decades in entertainment, as recent performances have sparked growing concern about the 82-year-old legend’s health.
Knight announced that after “much soul searching,” she has decided to perform less and enter a new chapter of her life, spending more time with her husband, William McDowell, her grandchildren and other personal projects.
Despite some reports calling it a retirement, Knight has not announced that she is completely retiring. She still has several scheduled performances remaining and has indicated that fans may continue to see her onstage from time to time.
The announcement comes after recent concerts raised questions among fans. During a July performance at the Hollywood Bowl and another August show in Detroit, some attendees said Knight appeared fatigued, took multiple breaks and relied more heavily on her background singers.
The performances have also fueled online speculation about possible cognitive decline or dementia. However, there has been no confirmed dementia diagnosis. Knight’s husband and manager has denied that she has dementia, although he acknowledged that she has “good days and bad days” and said she is expected to undergo a medical evaluation.
The latest concerns also follow a public family dispute in 2025, when Knight’s son, Shanga Hankerson, expressed concern about his mother’s health and alleged that she was being pushed to continue performing. Knight strongly denied those claims at the time and said she was healthy and happy.
For now, Knight appears to simply be slowing down after an extraordinary career spanning roughly 75 years.
The seven-time Grammy winner and Rock & Roll Hall of Famer has given fans generations of classics including “Midnight Train to Georgia,” “Neither One of Us,” “If I Were Your Woman” and “I Heard It Through the Grapevine.”
While recent footage has understandably caused concern, any reports of a specific illness remain speculation unless confirmed by Knight, her family or medical professionals.
After a lifetime of performing, the Empress of Soul may finally be ready for a lighter schedule — while still leaving the door open for future appearances.
