Sy’Rai is ready to show the world who she is outside of being Brandy’s daughter.
The 24-year-old singer and songwriter released her debut EP, Cold War, on Friday, August 28, marking her first official body of work and a major step forward in establishing her own identity in R&B.
The eight-track project explores love, heartbreak, complicated relationships, friendships, self-discovery and the growing pains that come with young adulthood.
Sy’Rai says the title reflects exactly where she is in life right now — feeling like she’s in a “cold war” while battling with herself, relationships, friendships and everything that comes with figuring out who you are as an adult.
The ‘Cold War’ Tracklist
- Mind Ya Business
- We Already Knew That
- Late Night
- Bullseye (Nice Shot)
- Paragon featuring Shakespeare!
- Stimulation
- Swimming Pools
- Cold War
Fans have already gotten a taste of the project through singles “Late Night” and “Bullseye (Nice Shot),” while the full EP gives Sy’Rai room to showcase her smooth vocals, harmonies and a sound heavily rooted in contemporary R&B.
Of course, comparisons to her legendary mother are inevitable. Sy’Rai has acknowledged that Brandy’s musical legacy is a part of her DNA, but she also wants listeners to understand that she has her own experiences, story and musical journey.
Brandy has been supportive throughout the process, encouraging her daughter to trust herself, know her worth and follow her own instincts as she navigates the music industry.
And the talent definitely runs in the family. Sy’Rai previously appeared alongside her mother on “High Heels” from Brandy’s 2020 album B7, but Cold War puts the spotlight completely on Sy’Rai as an artist in her own right.
Rather than simply introducing audiences to Brandy’s daughter, Cold War serves as the official introduction to Sy’Rai the artist — and she’s making it clear she plans to create her own lane while still honoring the musical legacy she comes from.
Cold War is available now on all major streaming platforms.
