All money is not good money, and R&B crooner John Legend made it clear that he does not need money that comes at the expense of others rights and lives.
John recently canceled an appearance for a party in honor of Hassanal Bolkiah, the current Sultan of Brunei which is a South Asian country.
The Los Angeles Confidential pre-Grammy soirée was to be held at the Beverly Hills Hotel in LA and the Sultan is the owner of the property. Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah also owns the Hotel Bel-Air through his Dorchester Collection.
So why did John cancel his appearance? In May of 2014 the Sultan passed a law punishing homosexuality and adultery with death and stoning.
When John found out who he was potentially performing in honor of he boycotted the event and made it very clear that he is not going to support or use his voice to support someone who does not align with his values and respect for everyone. His publicist issued the following statement on the matter
“In light of the horrific anti-women and anti-LGBT policies approved by the hotel’s owner, the Sultan of Brunei.”
“These policies, which among other things could permit women and LGBT Bruneians to be stoned to death, are heinous and certainly don’t represent John’s values or the spirit of the event. John does not, in any way, wish to further enrich the Sultan while he continues to enforce these brutal laws.”
Kudos to John for taking a stance for what is right, and not conforming for the almighty dollar. John is set to perform this Sunday at the 57th annual Grammy’s alongside Common and Beyonce in the show’s tribute to the movie ‘Selma’.
