The R&B world is mourning the loss of another legendary voice.
Freddie Jackson, the smooth crooner behind classics like “You Are My Lady,” “Rock Me Tonight (For Old Times Sake),” “Jam Tonight” and “Have You Ever Loved Somebody,” passed away Monday, October 5, just days after celebrating his birthday. He was 70.
His family confirmed the heartbreaking news through his official social media, remembering Freddie as not only a legendary voice, but a kind and generous soul whose music became part of countless love stories, celebrations and memories. A cause of death has not been announced.
And that description couldn’t be more fitting.
Freddie Jackson was one of THE voices of ’80s and ’90s R&B—back when the singers were SINGING and a slow jam could stop you dead in your tracks. His 1985 debut album, Rock Me Tonight, helped launch him into R&B superstardom, eventually earning platinum status and Grammy nominations. Over the course of his career, Jackson landed 10 No. 1 hits on the R&B charts and delivered a catalog that has remained in rotation for generations.
In 2024, Freddie revealed that he was living with kidney disease and later worked with the National Kidney Foundation to bring more awareness to the condition.
For those of us who love classic R&B, this one hurts. Freddie’s voice was smooth, unmistakable and timeless—and songs like “You Are My Lady” will forever be part of the soundtrack of Black love, cookouts, quiet storm radio and grown folks’ R&B.
Rest peacefully, Freddie Jackson. Thank you for the music.
