Brandy is officially heading to Hillman — vocally, at least!
Netflix announced Tuesday that Grammy Award-winning singer and actress Brandy Norwood has recorded a brand-new rendition of the iconic “A Different World” theme song for the highly anticipated sequel series.
The news feels especially fitting considering Brandy’s own place in Black television history. The singer famously starred as Moesha Mitchell on the hit sitcom Moesha from 1996 to 2001 and also performed that show’s memorable theme song. Now, decades later, she is lending her signature vocals to another beloved Black television classic.
“Singing this iconic theme song for A Different World means everything to me,” Brandy said in a statement announcing the news, recalling that the original series was one she made sure to watch whenever it aired.
The original A Different World theme was co-written by Dawnn Lewis, who starred as Jaleesa Vinson-Taylor, along with Bill Cosby, with music composed by Stu Gardner. Through the show’s original six-season run, different versions were performed by Phoebe Snow, Aretha Franklin and Boyz II Men.
Brandy now becomes the latest powerhouse vocalist to put her stamp on the instantly recognizable song as Netflix prepares to introduce a new generation to Hillman College.
A New Generation Heads to Hillman
Netflix’s A Different World sequel premieres September 24, 2026 — exactly 39 years after the original series debuted.
The new series centers on Deborah Wayne, played by Tony Award winner Maleah Joi Moon, the youngest daughter of original fan favorites Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert, portrayed once again by Kadeem Hardison and Jasmine Guy. Deborah arrives at Hillman College and begins navigating campus life while attempting to build an identity and legacy of her own.
Several other familiar faces are returning, including Cree Summer as Freddie Brooks, Darryl M. Bell as Ron Johnson, Charnele Brown as Kim Reese, Jenifer Lewis as Dean Dorothy Dandridge Davenport and Jada Pinkett Smith as Lena James.
The 10-episode series is led by showrunner and executive producer Felicia Pride, while A Different World legend Debbie Allen returns as an executive producer and director.
With the original characters returning, a new generation taking over Hillman and now Brandy providing the soundtrack, Netflix is making sure its trip back to A Different World has plenty of connections to the Black TV and R&B legacy that made the original so special.
