The long-awaited ‘Verzuz‘ battle between Ashanti and Keyshia Cole finally went down on Thursday night (Jan.21) after two previous reschedules but fans were not happy with the battle being delayed over an hour.

The battle was set to start at 8pm ET, but as fans of the series know, the artists usually are a bit delayed to build anticipation. However, this time it was so delayed that it didn’t officially start until almost 10pm.

Ashanti came on screen from her own private location after about an hour of fans waiting and informed the viewers that Keyshia was on the way and she began to play some of her music, including her new single, until Keyshia arrived.

Eventually, Keyshia came on-screen and fans could instantly sense a bit of attitude as she didn’t apologize, or acknowledge her tardiness. Now her DJ says her energy was definitely off and acknowledges her lateness, but says it wasn’t her fault.

GoDJ Hi-C did an exclusive interview with radio station 97.9 The Box on Friday and dished on the behind the scenes drama.

“It started out weird. Stuff that you don’t see behind the scenes,”

“In Keyshia’s defense, I can truly say that she didn’t want to come out ’cause her screen was blurry.”

“She was there but she didn’t want to come out because the screen was blurry and stuff wasn’t right. We couldn’t hear [Ashanti’s] side so there was a lot of technical stuff going on in there,”

“Because she’s a perfectionist and when stuff don’t go the right way, it’s downhill from there,”

“She was already upset about it being pushed back like it was anyway but there’s COVID. So the buildup and it made her have to push her record back…It just threw her energy off, but I did the best I could to try to bring her back but by that time, she was already upset.”
