The DMV showed up and showed OUT Sunday night as Teddy Riley brought the New Jack Swing Birthday Bash to The Theater at MGM National Harbor, celebrating not one, but two major milestones — his 60th birthday and 40 years of New Jack Swing.
The legendary producer, songwriter and architect of the New Jack Swing sound took fans on a trip through a catalog that helped define an entire era of R&B, hip-hop and pop culture.
Raheem DeVaughn served as host for the evening and later joined Teddy on stage as friends, family and fans helped celebrate his milestone birthday. It was only right to have one of the DMV’s own helping lead the celebration.
The night also put Guy 2.0 front and center as Teddy continues to usher in the next chapter of the Guy legacy while still paying homage to the music and movement that started it all.
And one of the biggest surprises of the night? Teddy revealed that a New Jack Swing tour is officially in the works!
Details are still to come, but judging by the response inside MGM, there is definitely still an audience ready to relive that era live. With Teddy’s catalog and the number of artists connected to the New Jack Swing movement, the possibilities for that tour are BIG.
From the fashion to the music, the entire night felt like a full-on celebration of late-’80s and early-’90s R&B culture, with fans pulling up in their best New Jack Swing-inspired looks and singing along to records that still hit just as hard decades later.
Teddy’s fingerprints are all over some of the biggest records and artists in music history — from Guy and Blackstreet to Michael Jackson, Bobby Brown, Keith Sweat and countless others — all whose music he performed as part of the celebration.
Teddy also took the time to thank and celebrate the DMV area for being the place that helped make his career early on and sustained his sound over the years.
