Mýa is keeping the Retrospect era moving with the release of her new single and video, “Give It to You,” featuring D-Nice.
The upbeat track serves as the opening song on Mýa’s recently released 10th studio album, Retrospect, and leans heavily into the funk, soul and dance sounds of the late ’70s and ’80s. The album marked her first full-length project in eight years and was released independently through her Planet 9 imprint in partnership with Virgin Music Group.
“Give It to You” immediately sets the tone for the project with its bass-heavy production, playful vocals and undeniable feel-good energy. Mýa previously revealed that the song’s vocal approach was partly inspired by the late funk legend Rick James, whose music helped shape the overall sound and spirit of Retrospect.
The accompanying visual fully embraces the song’s throwback sound with a fun, colorful, ’80s-inspired concept. Mýa delivers multiple vibrant looks, slick choreography and the polished performance energy that fans have come to expect throughout her nearly three-decade career.
D-Nice also joins the celebration, adding another familiar DMV connection to the record and appearing alongside Mýa in the video. The collaboration fits perfectly within the joyful, nostalgic world she created for the album.
Mýa described Retrospect as a project rooted in joy and inspired by the music she heard growing up at cookouts, roller rinks and while watching Soul Train. The album draws inspiration from artists including Prince, Rick James, Teena Marie, Vanity 6, the S.O.S. Band, Evelyn “Champagne” King and Patrice Rushen—all while avoiding the use of samples.
The new visual follows the release of the album’s lead single, “A.S.A.P.,” and continues Mýa’s latest run as an independent artist, songwriter, producer and creative director.
Retrospect is available now across all major streaming platforms.
