The year of Hov continues!
HBO has officially announced a new 8-part Jay-Z documentary series titled JAŸ-Z In 8, and it sounds like fans are finally getting the kind of deep-dive conversation they’ve been waiting for.
The upcoming HBO Original documentary series will feature Jay-Z sitting down with legendary producer Rick Rubin for what is being described as a candid and intimate conversation years in the making. The series will explore Jay’s music, lyrics, life experiences, and creative process, giving viewers a closer look at one of hip-hop’s most influential figures.
The project is set to premiere this fall on HBO and will also be available to stream on HBO Max/Max.
Rubin and Jay-Z’s creative history goes back decades, most notably with Rubin producing the classic “99 Problems” from Jay’s 2003 album The Black Album. Now, the two will reconnect in a different way, with Rubin guiding an eight-part conversation centered around Jay’s artistry, evolution, and legacy.
The announcement arrives during a major milestone year for Hov, as he celebrates the 30th anniversary of his debut album, Reasonable Doubt. The 1996 classic remains one of the most celebrated debut albums in hip-hop history, and Jay has been marking the anniversary in several major ways.
Earlier this month, a special 30th anniversary edition of Reasonable Doubt was made available for pre-order on vinyl, featuring exclusive packaging, a white color variant, and collector-focused details for fans. Jay-Z also recently announced a limited-edition Brooklyn Public Library card in honor of the album’s anniversary.
On top of that, Jay is gearing up for a major return to the stage with a series of highly anticipated Yankee Stadium shows in July. The run includes anniversary-themed performances celebrating Reasonable Doubt and The Blueprint, along with an additional “Extra Innings” show.
Jay also made headlines this week after a Texas judge dismissed lawsuits filed by attorney Tony Buzbee against Jay-Z and Roc Nation. The legal drama stemmed from claims connected to prior litigation, but the judge ruled the Texas court lacked jurisdiction. Buzbee has reportedly indicated he plans to appeal.
In lighter family news, Beyoncé also recently opened up about Jay-Z’s natural hair journey in a new Cécred video, revealing that Blue Ivy helped inspire him to grow out his hair years ago. Jay debuted his new afro look during his recent Roots Picnic performance, with Beyoncé sharing that the style also paid tribute to his late father.
Between the documentary, the anniversary celebrations, the special releases, the upcoming concerts, and the headlines surrounding his personal and legal life, Jay-Z is having one of his most active public years in quite some time.
No official premiere date has been announced just yet, but JAŸ-Z In 8 is expected to arrive on HBO this fall.
