They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and if that’s true than Eugene Marshall should be very pleased. Lets’ face it, we live in a world ran by filters and social media apps. Style isn’t just manufactured for viral applause or uber faddish trends. Style is a true art from that speaks more to the person’s personality rather than the labels on their back. Marshall’s keen eye for the male aesthetic has led him to a successful run as the Men’s Stylist for SSENSE.com. So, every time you click that mouse and take inspiration from a piece that you’ve fallen in love with just understand that it was Eugene that brought that LOOK to life.
1. Thanks to social media we now live in the world of quick fashion, carbon copies and faux fashionistas. Do you think it’s hard for the truly talented to get noticed?
“Yes. I believe it’s incredibly hard because, like you said, everyone wants to be a “fashionista,” and social media is making that easier and more accessible than ever. People have this idea of “if I buy a Givenchy t-shirt that makes me down with the clique” – that’s not the case. I see these “faux fashionistas” and I think it’s mind boggling cause some of them really, truly think they’re doing something unique just because they’re decked out in Balmain & Rick Owens with a pair of Giuseppe sneakers and lets not speak on how accessible Givenchy has become. Real style is about so much more than that. It’s all about how you understand fashion, and how you use that knowledge to piece your looks together that will make you stand out.”
2. Being a Men’s Stylist at SSENSE.com, how important is it for you to maintain relevance in a field where we’re constantly looking for something bigger and better?
“It’s undoubtedly the most important thing. Part of working at SSENSE is knowing how to push the boundaries, bend the rules, and be unexpected, especially where styling is concerned. Like I said, it’s about understanding the fashion and using that to your advantage. If you don’t stand out, you blend in, and blending in this industry means losing relevance.”
3. Who are your creative muses?
“I’m in love with Raf Simons and J.W Anderson. I love how they play with textures, colours, and silhouettes. I also love designers whose clothing have no gender, like Rad Hourani. I am all about mixing menswear with womenswear.”
4. What motivated you to step in front of the camera? Was modeling a natural progression?
“The funny thing is I’m not a model at all. I just like to have and take awesome pictures. It takes me about a hour to upload an image on Instagram or Facebook after I make my selection. I wanted to model when I was younger but that time has passed.”
5. Top 5 designers dead or alive.
“Jonny Johansson, Raf Simons, J.W Anderson, Phillip Lim and Alexander Wang.”
6. If we were to invade your closet what one item we would be surprised you own?
“A royal blue fur coat, very Detroit pimp!”
7. Describe your personal style.
“Minimalist. Modern. Sports luxe with a twist.”
8. Is there anyone in social media land that you feel is up on their LEGIT fashion game ?
“Keywords: LEGIT and social media! I’d say there are maybe 2-4 people that I see on social media that are hip to the game. No names though this is my interview!”
9. An article of clothing you can’t live without?
“My white low-top Converse.”
10. What are you looking forward to rocking from the spring/summer 2014 collection?
“Raf Simons, Acne, Phillip Lim…you’ll have to stay tuned to find out!”
