On Monday (June 11) CNN held an on air panel on their show New Day featuring NYPD detective Harry Houck and CNN commentator Marc Lamont Hill . During the segment, the two discussed the recent police killing two black men, Philando Castile and Alton Sterling and the tension between the black community and law enforcement.
As to be expected when discussing the sensitive subject, things went a little left when Houck argued that black people are “prone to criminality,” and that activists should stop claiming that blacks were being “picked on” by law enforcement. He also argued that “racial demagogues” were wrong to complain about “disparities of blacks and whites in jails” and attempted to prove his claims by presenting a sheet of paper which he said had statistics proving that black people were far more likely to commit violent crimes than whites.
This declaration naturally did not sit well with Hill, who responded.
“Harry just went on national TV and said black people are prone to criminality!” Hill reacted.
“Well, they are!” Houck replied.
“You think black people are prone to criminality?” Hill asked, raising his voice. “You don’t mean to say that. I’m going to give you a chance to correct [yourself]. You don’t mean that black people are prone to criminality.”
