Wakanda is officially heading back to the big screen!
Marvel Studios delivered one of the biggest surprises of San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, July 25, officially announcing Black Panther 3 and revealing the actor who will lead the franchise into its next chapter.
British actor David Jonsson has been cast as the adult son of the late King T’Challa and will become the MCU’s newest Black Panther. Jonsson is known for his acclaimed performances in HBO’s Industry, Alien: Romulus and The Long Walk.
Jonsson joined Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and director Ryan Coogler onstage alongside returning franchise stars Letitia Wright and Winston Duke. While addressing the crowd, the actor expressed his gratitude for joining the Black Panther family but remained tight-lipped about what audiences can expect from his character.
The younger T’Challa was first introduced during the emotional closing moments of 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The child, whose Wakandan name is Toussaint, was revealed to be the son of T’Challa and Nakia. The upcoming movie will reportedly follow the character as he comes of age and steps into the enormous legacy left behind by his father.
Ryan Coogler, who directed and co-wrote the first two blockbuster films, will return to helm the third installment. Letitia Wright is also expected to return as Shuri, who became the Black Panther in Wakanda Forever, while Winston Duke will reprise his role as M’Baku.
The film will also mark the highly anticipated Marvel Cinematic Universe debut of Denzel Washington. Coogler previously revealed that he created a role specifically for the two-time Academy Award winner after wanting to collaborate with him for years. Details surrounding Washington’s character have not yet been announced.
The original Black Panther, released in 2018, became a global cultural phenomenon and earned more than $1.3 billion at the worldwide box office. It also made history as the first superhero movie nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. Its 2022 sequel, Wakanda Forever, earned approximately $850 million worldwide while honoring the life and legacy of Chadwick Boseman, who died in 2020.
Coogler’s decision to center the next installment around T’Challa’s son creates a new path for the franchise without erasing Boseman’s unforgettable impact. It also raises several major questions: How will the younger T’Challa inherit the mantle? What role will Shuri continue to play as Black Panther? And what new threat will bring Wakanda’s heroes together?
Fans will have some time to speculate. Black Panther 3 is scheduled to arrive exclusively in theaters on December 15, 2028, with the movie reportedly being filmed in the large-format 70mm format.
