Check Out Our Top Picks For The Cast of ‘The Wiz’ Remake, Who Do You Think Should Be Considered?

Posted June 4, 2015

We told you that our girl Brandy is gunning for the lead role of Dorothy in the upcoming Broadway revival of ‘The Wiz’ which will also be televised on NBC on December 3.

“My dream is to reopen ‘The Wiz’ on Broadway. That is a dream role for me,” “It’s just something that I really want to experience: being Dorothy on Broadway. I’ve been putting it out there. So I think the word is getting out that’s something I would really like to do.” Brandy told The Huffington Post of her desire.

Bran has always been our top pick, but after a hefty debate, we began to think what other ladies could take on the role of Dorothy? so we have compiled our top cast picks to include Dorothy and the other characters.

Jade Novah

Jade who we have interviewed with before, has a a love of the theater, Disney classics, and musicals, admiring entertainers such as Barbara Streisand and Julie Andrews and the personality and voice perfect for Broadway.

She even appeared in the Tyler Perry production of “Madea’s Big Happy Family” as both a background vocalist and understudy. The singer/actress and overall entertainer would be a stellar fit for the Broadway version of the remake thanks to her versatile vocals and her comedic acting chops.

Janelle Monae

It goes without saying that Janelle is one of the most dynamic and colorful performers of our time. Her albums and performances suck you into a mystical and magical world where you never want to leave. The ‘Electric Lady’ has delivered some show stopping vocal performances along with killer dancing, which makes her a top contender for ‘The Wiz’. Janelle is so versatile in fact that she could play any one of the lead characters and do each respective role justice and bring something totally different to each role.

Chris Brown

For years Breezy has been called the second coming of the great Michael Jackson, and is one of the best dancers since the legendary performer. His vocal talent, mixed with his height, slender build and his amazing dance skills makes him our top contender for the spot of the Scarecrow, the role originally held by his musical inspiration the king of pop.

Bran is currently killing her role as Roxie Hart on Broadway in ‘Chicago The Musical’ and as we said she has expressed her interest. Brandy’s vocal chops alone make her a wonderful fit for the role of Dorothy and the fact that she is a seasoned performer on stage, music and television only adds to her case.

It only makes sense that the first African American Cinderella who performed in the TV musical of that classic story take on the live TV musical for this revival right?? If not for the long term Broadway run, for sure she should be the lead role for the NBC revival.

Andre 3000

The Outkast front man has been making major strides in the acting world with roles in ‘Be Cool’, ‘Four Brothers’ and most recently taking on the role of Jimi Hendrix in ‘All Is By My Side’. With his eclectic out of this world persona and style, Andre could easily play the role of The Wiz or the a super fly and funky Cowardly Lion. If NBC wants to make it modern he would definitely add a cool hip hop element to the revival.

Evan Ross

How awesome would it be to star in the revival of the classic that your mom the legendary Diana Ross helped make a major success as its original Dorothy? Pretty darn cool which is why Evan is one of our picks. We will throw him in the ring for the Scarecrow battle. We already know he can act but now with the release of his new single and upcoming album, we are slowly getting familiar with his musical talents.

Willow Smith

It kind of goes without saying that Willow is one of if not THE coolest kids on the planet earth, tied with her brother Jaden Smith. We know Willow was originally up for the role of Annie but since that didn’t happen we can definitely without question see her killing it as Dorothy. The pint size actress/singer and overall superstar just became the face of Marc Jacobs for 2015’s fall/winter line and her dope snap from the campaign (above) has us sold on the possibility of her playing the lead role. We don’t think we have to do too much convincing here!
