Michael Jackson’s story is officially continuing on the big screen.
Following the massive box-office success of Michael, Lionsgate is moving forward with a second installment of the Michael Jackson biopic, with production expected to begin toward the end of 2026 or in early 2027.
The studio is reportedly targeting a release sometime in late 2027 or the first half of 2028.
The sequel comes after Michael became a historic box-office success, grossing more than $1 billion worldwide. The film currently sits at approximately $1.016 billion globally, including more than $372 million domestically and over $643 million internationally.
The milestone made Michael the first biopic in history to cross $1 billion at the worldwide box office, surpassing Oppenheimer to become the highest-grossing biopic of all time. It also surpassed Bohemian Rhapsody as the highest-grossing music biopic and became the first Lionsgate release ever to reach $1 billion.
The first film stars Michael’s nephew Jaafar Jackson as the King of Pop and follows Jackson’s journey from his childhood with The Jackson 5 through his rise as a solo superstar and into his Bad era.
Filmmakers already have a head start on Part 2, as approximately 25–30% of potential material for the sequel was reportedly filmed during production of the first movie.
The next installment is expected to explore later chapters of Jackson’s career, potentially including the Dangerous and HIStory eras, his legendary 1993 Super Bowl halftime performance, later world tours and other major moments from his life and career.
An official title, full returning cast and exact release date have not yet been announced.
