While on a promo junket to promote her new BET show “Chasing Destiny” which premieres Tuesday, April 5, 2016 at 10pm ET/PT, Kelly Rowland encountered one of the most awkward moments she probably has ever had to deal with in her career.
The singer was joined alongside famed creative director and friend, Frank Gatson who has been the creative director for both Beyonce and Destiny’s Child, and has choreographed videos and live performances for the likes of Kelly herself, Michael Jackson, TLC, Jennifer Lopez, Toni Braxton, and most notably, En Vogue.
The pair were part of a panel as part of the Viacom portion of This is Cable 2016 Television Critics Association Press Tour at Langham Hotel on January 6, 2016 in Pasadena, California. During this panel they dished on the upcoming series and things went totally left.
As previously reported, BET and Kelly are not calling the series a reality competition show but bill it as “a quest to find the next big female superstar group to make their mark in the dog-eat-dog music industry.” The singing hopefuls “will vie their way to stardom with recording mogul Rowland helping them to find their voice as entertainers.”
Things were going just fine until Gaton reportedly got a little too vocal and too real about his thoughts on Destiny’s Child‘s former members as well as En Vogue. Via Eurweb:
Here’s Gatson Wednesday on En Vogue being better singers than Destiny’s Child:
“I always thought En Vogue can sing better than Destiny’s Child. [Kelly] doesn’t agree. Those four girls all were lead singers. In Destiny’s Child, they were all lead singers, too, but in En Vogue, they were just amazing because they were put together organically, and I think that’s the thing that’s going to happen with this show.”
“Well, Destiny’s Child was put together organically as well,” Kelly said.
“Okay. You’re right. She’s right,” said Gatson. “I worked with Destiny’s Child, but it’s just one of those things. You don’t want to say who is best and who is not better. I am really upset at En Vogue right now because I was going to get wooden floors with en Vogue, and they broke up, and it pissed me off. So now with Destiny’s Child, I’m so glad. They’re the type of group that never broke up. They’re the type of group that are sisters, they’re friends, they’re professional, and they’re nice. And that’s why they make so much f**king money. You understand? Because a lot of people think that show business is about being an A hole. It’s not. It’s about being sweet. And when you’re sweet, you can last. You understand? Patti LaBelle, that’s a really nice lady. Beyoncé, come on. There’s a reason she’s big. There’s a reason that Kelly thank you, Kelly, for allowing me to be on this damn show.”
It didn’t end there though. Kelly was asked how her Destiny’s Child cohorts were able to stay so close after their breakup…and Gatson jumping in with his random thought about original Destiny’s Child members LaTavia and LeToya, and how the syncing of women’s menstrual cycles within girl groups is “magical”. Check out the audio of what he had to say and listen to Kelly’s response.
