This past Sunday (May 10), legendary musician Prince visited Baltimore and held a free “Rally 4 Peace” concert at Royal Farms Arena in honor of Freddie Gray and those who have lost their lives as a result of police brutality. The singer performed alongside his band 3RDEYEGIRL and debuted a new song titled ‘Baltimore’.
“Does anybody hear us pray / 4 Michael Brown or Freddie Gray? / Peace is more than the absence of war,” sings Prince before chanting, “If there ain’t no justice, then there ain’t no peace.” he sings over the upbeat call for peace.
Prince wasn’t the only celebrity using his influence and voice to promote change and peace. According to reports, Concertgoers were asked “to wear something gray,” in honor of the 25-year-old Baltimore man who died while in police custody.
“The system is broken,” Prince shouted to the crowd at the Royal Farms Area during his performance. “It’s up to you young folks to fix it.”
Live audio from the concert was streamed free via the digital live music service TIDAL.
Jay Z and Beyoncé were also in attendance at the concert and visited Gray’s family and took photos with Mike Brown’s mother. Tina Knowles and Alicia Keys also posed for photos with Brown’s mother backstage. The mother of slain Ferguson teen Mike Brown, Lesley McSpadden, also came out for the peace concert where she got a photo-op with Mrs. Carter, Alicia Keys and Mama Tina. Nice.
