Actor Michael Wright, best known to generations of fans as the unforgettable Eddie King Jr. in The Five Heartbeats, has died. He was 70 years old.
Wright’s wife, Susan Wright, confirmed his passing in a social media statement on August 21, asking for privacy as the family mourns. A cause of death has not been publicly disclosed.
For many, Wright will forever be remembered for his powerful performance as Eddie King Jr., the immensely talented but troubled lead singer at the center of Robert Townsend’s beloved 1991 musical drama The Five Heartbeats. The film followed the rise, struggles and eventual reunion of a fictional R&B vocal group and has become a certified classic in Black cinema and music culture over the decades.
Wright’s performance as Eddie remains one of the movie’s most celebrated elements, bringing equal parts charisma, vulnerability and intensity to the role. More than three decades after the film’s release, Eddie King Jr. remains one of the most recognizable characters from the movie.
However, Wright’s career extended well beyond The Five Heartbeats. He appeared in films including The Wanderers, Streamers, The Principal, Sugar Hill, Money Talks, Piñero and The Interpreter. On television, audiences may also remember him as Elias Taylor in the sci-fi franchise V and Omar White on HBO’s acclaimed prison drama Oz. He later appeared in Black Lightning.
Wright also received major critical acclaim early in his career for his performance in the 1983 film Streamers, sharing the Volpi Cup for Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival with his fellow cast members.
News of Wright’s passing quickly prompted tributes from fans and members of the entertainment community, many remembering not only his work throughout his decades-long career but particularly the lasting impact of The Five Heartbeats.
His passing comes during a milestone year for the film, which celebrates its 35th anniversary in 2026.
Michael Wright leaves behind a body of work that helped cement his place in film and television history — and a performance as Eddie King Jr. that will continue to resonate with Five Heartbeats fans for generations.
