The anticipation behind Jordan Peele‘s highly anticipated film ‘US‘ has certainly paid off in more ways than one in just it’s first weekend in box offices.
The film topped box offices for opening weekend making it the largest domestic opening weekend ever for an original horror film (meaning a film that was not a sequel, a reboot, or based on another existing film). It brought in over $70 million domestically, beating the previous record holder, last year’s A Quiet Place.
It’s also become the biggest debut for an original R-rated film since ‘Ted’ in 2012. Worldwide, the film brought in over $86.7 million which is a huge feet for the film which had a $20 million budget.
The film which stars Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke, Shahadi Wright Joseph, Evan Alex, Elisabeth Moss, and Tim Heidecker also had the second-highest opening for a live-action original film, after Avatar in 2009, which came in just over $77 million. The only other horror film to surpass ‘US’ for opening weekend is last year’s ‘Halloween’ which is the 11th film from the long running franchise. That film which brought in $76 million domestically on its opening weekend.
‘US’ becomes Peele’s latest hit, following the highly popular 2017 film ‘Get Out,’ which brought in $33 million domestically in its opening weekend and ultimately ended its theatrical run with $176 million in the US. The film went on to score four Oscar nods, including Best Picture; Peele won for Best Original Screenplay.
Congrats to Jordan and the entire cast!
