Last night, during Grammy Week festivities in Los Angeles, Brandy Norwood was rightfully celebrated as the legend she is.
The R&B icon was honored with the Black Music Icon Award at the Recording Academy Honors, presented by the Recording Academy’s Black Music Collective, recognizing her decades-long impact on music, culture, and generations of artists who followed in her footsteps.
With a career spanning over 30 years, Brandy’s influence is undeniable. From redefining vocal arrangements and harmonies to setting the blueprint for modern R&B vocalists, her imprint is everywhere. It’s no accident she’s affectionately known as The Vocal Bible.
The award celebrates Black music creators whose artistry, innovation, and cultural contributions have shaped the industry on a global level — and Brandy checks every single box. From her self-titled debut to the genre-shifting Never Say Never, and iconic records like “I Wanna Be Down,” “Full Moon,” and the Grammy-winning “The Boy Is Mine,” Brandy helped define an era while continuously evolving her sound.
Beyond the music, her cultural impact expanded through television and film, with unforgettable roles on Moesha and as the first Black Cinderella.
Brandy accepted the honor surrounded by her family, peers, industry leaders, and fellow honorees, including Kirk Franklin and Pharrell Williams. Her family — including her brother Ray J, her parents, and her daughter Sy’rai — were all in the building showing love.
Get into some of the clips of the night.
Raven Symoné was just spotted in Los Angeles, where she surprised the crowd by coming out for a dance tribute to Brandy’s song “Top of the World” while Brandy watched from the crowd.
