Hip-hop had a major moment tonight.
Kendrick Lamar took home Best Rap Album at the 68th Annual Grammy Awards — and didn’t just walk away with another trophy. He made history.
With this win, Kendrick officially surpassed Jay-Z’s long-standing record, becoming the most-awarded rapper in GRAMMY history.
The victory felt especially fitting given the year Kendrick has had. What makes this moment even bigger is the symbolism. Breaking a record held by Jay-Z — one of the greatest to ever do it — places Kendrick in rare air, if he wasn’t already there. It’s a passing-the-torch-meets-mount-rushmore type of moment for the culture.
Going into the night, Kendrick Lamar already had 22 GRAMMYs under his belt, placing him among the most decorated rappers in the nearly 70-year history of the awards.
But by the time the pre-show wrapped, Kendrick had added three more trophies — winning Best Rap Performance for “Chains & Whips” with Clipse, Best Melodic Rap Performance for “Luther” with SZA, and Best Rap Song for “TV Off.”
Those wins officially tied him with Jay-Z at 25 total GRAMMYs, setting the stage for the history-making moment that followed. With the Best Rap Album win during the main show, he has now received 26 GRAMMYs, officially surpassing Jay-Z.
